COVID-19 Update: Vaccine and Christmas

Dear Families of Residents at The Cove:

The most exciting news to date since the pandemic began is that a COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for distribution. Nursing homes in Rhode Island are to be the first recipients – we are fortunate to be in this initial phase of immunization!

We have received a heads-up that our clinical provider, CVS Health, will be administering the vaccine to residents onsite at The Cove in late December or early January, with no exact date scheduled.

We expect to get notified of the vaccination clinic date on short notice, therefore it’s critical that your family’s Responsible Party begin now to decide whether or not your loved one will get vaccinated (you won’t be allowed to change your mind once your paperwork is received). Our Medical Director and Attending Physician recommend that all residents at The Cove get the vaccine.

In the meantime, rest assured we are gathering as much detail about the clinic preparations as possible and will share this information and “next steps” in the process with you. As you can imagine, this is a complex, important event with many logistical elements being coordinated on both the federal and state level. We appreciate your patience and understanding that general inquiry phone calls may take our staff longer to return in the coming weeks.

We remind you that The Cove remains at Level 3 visitation restriction as the community spread of the coronavirus in Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts remains at an all-time high. It’s likely that this visitor restriction will extend through the Christmas holiday. No residents have tested positive for COVID-19, and we want to keep it that way! We are busy caring safely for your loved one as our top priority every day.

The vaccine gives us hope that we are so close to the end of this pandemic. We look forward to your full cooperation in helping to make this a reality.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Lescault, Assistant Administrator
